If you’ve recently moved house, you may be getting excited about decorating it. Decorating a home allows you to show your personality and taste, and make it truly yours.

Decorating your new home is a chance to get rid of any old furniture you’ve been keeping and loathing, and replace is with new furniture which can enter the next stage of your life, without young animals and kids.

Explore your taste

Whether you want to go with a theme, or you just want soft colours, it’s important to know what styles and colours you like. Spend some time looking through magazines, going to open homes, and watching those excellent reality TV programs about decorating. You’ll soon know what you like, and what you don’t.

If you’re used to choosing furniture and colours based on how long it will last, or how it will show the dirt, now’s the time to stop. Hopefully your kids have all left the nest and you can focus on buying furniture simply because you like it. So now’s the time for that white couch or rug, the light coloured walls, and pretty tiles.

Plan the furniture

You may have some key pieces of furniture that you’re keeping from the old house, and you can definitely re-purpose it for the new house. Consider getting couches reupholstered, painting or varnishing tables, and accessorizing.

For an inexpensive way to completely change the look of your house, consider choosing kitchen pendant lights which can give your kitchen personality, changing it from a boring room to one which has unique and interesting lighting.

DIY

Doing it yourself is a fun way to put your stamp on your home. If you’re artistic, consider adding some paintings, sewing some pillow covers, or building a side table. Garage and yard sales can be great ways to find treasures which you can then re-purpose and make your own. There are also lots of DIY blogs and websites like Pinterest which will help spark your creativity.

Set a budget

It can be tempting to go all out when decorating a new home, however you’ll find that if you’re spending way too much money it will just be a stressful experience. Sit down and divide your total budget by each room. You may need to spend more on the kitchen and bathroom if you’re investing on new appliances, however making sure you stick to a budget is also a great way to ensure that you’re being creative.

Have fun

Remember that decorating should be fun, and not stressful. If you realise that you’ve made a mistake in a few months, you can always repaint or sell that bright red couch. If the process seems completely overwhelming, commit to decorating just the key rooms which you spend the most time in, and leave the rest for later on in the year when you have more time and less pressure.
