The Boomers Dilemma

The Cost Of Medical Care Is Escalating

The Cost Of Medical Care Is Escalating

Longevity means we are living longer, and as the bubble of boomers moves into their senior years, the stress on healthcare continues to escalate. We are facing a time in history were the cost of medical care is escalating dramatically and there is every indication cost will continue to rise at the same time as the stressors on the system escalate exponentially with the increasing aging population. Longevity is rising increasing the number of aging people and when you add to that the bubble of baby boomers that is pushing the envelope towards their senior years, the demands on our health system are only going to increase. Some of the challenges are already creating problems.

While it is known that in most places ‘elective’ surgery wait lists are too long, the cost of these delays put a further burden on individuals and the health care system. Take for example, a hip replacement. If one has to wait six months for a hip replacement tha cost of medication and additional care to ensure the safety of the patient, can mount up quickly! The cost of homecare or burden on family caregivers can create a spiral effect. If an aging spouse is caring for a spouse who is awaiting surgery the extra stress, may erode their ability to stay healthy.

Will it come to a system where the weathly get care and those who do not have the means to pay for expensive private clinics lose out. And, if so, what does that say about some of the riches countries in the world?

The onus rests on boomers to lobby for change, now. It is already clear that we have a problem. Waiting until the problem affects you is not an option.
