When I was 10 the unknown caused fear. When I was 20 the unknown was called excitement now that I’m 50 the same unknown is called STRESS. I really don’t need any stress – especially on my vacation. What’s the ideal holiday? – one I can look forward to, as that’s a large part of my holiday too, and arrange without stress. All arrangements on my side of the flight I can cope with but what happens at the other end? I want to be picked up by a smiling face and taken without any worry of my luggage straight to my first hotel, sitting comfortably with my gin and tonic.
Firstly lets choose a place that speaks the same lingo as Paul Simon said –“ To England where my heart lies “. After a career in teaching I decided I would like to take the stress out of travel for visitors to our country. As driver guide in London for 20 years I was able to show the history and pageantry of our great capital but now in our 50s we have now moved to the most beautiful countryside of the Cotswolds – the real England that seems to have slowed time.
We are based in Winchcombe – an ancient town in the north Cotswolds which was the capital of Mercia in Saxon times. We have renovated an ancient Inn and are now able to offer accommodation and transport for small groups of 8 people and give an English home experience.
We plan tours to join around events such as the Chelsea Flower show and also garden tours for individuals to join. Other times are free for people to design their itinerary for a small group or family having their own private tour. We have a Royal Wedding tour this year where we will join the celebrations in London and stay in Hampton Court Palace. As we have small numbers, we are able to include some really neat places and events before retreating to the quiet of the Cotswolds. We have a golf and garden tour which has 2 itineraries – one for golfers one for non-golfers. I soon learnt not to say “one for men playing golf and one for the ladies”. There is a unique opportunity to play for the original Ryder Cup actually the Ryder Trophy presented by Sam Ryder 20 years before the famous prize. We have also found many active visitors want to experience the beauty of the countryside walks but let us take away any bags to carry, have a pint waiting at the other end and a car to take you home.
I think that when I arrange or plan a tour for visitors, many from the United states, I am for ever thinking “Would I like to do this myself ?” – so many tours forget what people ideally want and present over stacked itineraries to look value for money or forget that stress come by the parts in between the ease of transfer, the movement of luggage or the crush at an attraction. Providing a helping hand when needed, privacy when wanted, a relaxed pace, good food and good company, we are on the way to an ideal vacation.
